Coffee Co. Middle Softball Finishes Season In 2nd Place

A walk-off RBI from Lauren Tomberlin pushed Coffee Middle softball team to a 6 to 5 victory over Harris Middle in the CTC Tournament on Friday night in Tullahoma. The Lady Raiders, playing in the elimination bracket, were pushed to the limit by the upstart Tigers. Coffee Middle was led in hitting by Shelby Scrivnor who had two doubles and an RBI. Tomberlin finished with a single, a double and the game winning RBI. Kasarah Scheller also added a double and an RBI to advance the Lady Raiders to the 3 PM semifinal game on Saturday against Warren County. The CTC Tournament is being held at East Middle in Tullahoma.

The Coffee Middle School softball team reached their FIRST Saturday goal of playing 3 games to advance to the conference championship game in Tullahoma. Unfortunately, a hot hitting Tullahoma squad squashed their championship dreams with a 12 to 8 win in a rematch of the finals. The Lady Raiders finished the with the 2nd place trophy, a regular season conference title and a final season record of 16 and 4.

The day started with a come from behind semifinal win over Warren County in extra innings by a score of 7 to 6. Amanda Mukai, who was in as the courtesy runner for Shelby Scrivnor, scored from 3rd base on a ball hit to the shortstop in the bottom of the 7th to advance the Lady Raiders to the finals. Scrivnor had led off the inning with a double to centerfield. Kasarah Scheller was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the Raider hitting attack. Scrivnor finished the day 2 for 4.

In the finals, the Lady Raiders needed 2 wins over Tullahoma to win the tournament title. In Game 1, Erin Ferrell pitched a gem scattering 8 hits while striking out 4 Lady Cats in a 3 to 2 Coffee Middle win. Ferrell got a double play from her defense in the 3rd inning and coaxed 2 pop ups with 2 runners in scoring position in the 4th inning to end Tullahoma rallies. Scrivnor finished the game with a double and a triple and an RBI while Karlyssa Meadows and Kasarah Scheller added singles to force a final “winner take all” championship game.

In the championship game, Tullahoma banged out 13 hits, including 3 doubles and a triple to win the title over the Lady Raiders by a final score of 12 to 8. The scrappy Raiders had 3 impressive comeback attempts as they fell behind 3 to 0 before rallying with 2 runs in the 2nd inning, trailing 7 to 2 ; they plated 3 runs in the 3rd and a final 2 run inning in the 4th before running out of chances. Athena Lusk was 1 for 1 as she had a single, 2 walks and an RBI to lead a 7 hit Lady Raider attack. Lauren Tomberlin had an RBI triple, Haley Richardson banged out an RBI double and Alisabeth York had a single and an RBI sacrifice for Coffee Middle.
