Mrs. Fischer passed from this earthly life Tuesday, September 8, 2015 in Manchester after an extended illness.
She was born May 9, 1923 in Beechgrove, TN the daughter of the late Paul Gannaway Mason, Sr., and Marie Louise Glaus Mason. The highest regard for education and a keen, inquisitive mind allowed Sherrill to graduate from Buchanan High School at the age of 16. She received her B.S. from Middle Tennessee State College in 1943 and was granted her M.S. in 1962 after receiving a fellowship for mathematics and science teacher from the National Science Foundation. She married the love of her life, Alfred Raymond Fischer on July 26, 1946 and the two began their lives together. With her education, she proudly and lovingly taught and influenced numerous children in Bedford, Rutherford and Coffee County for forty years. Her major area of teaching was mathematics, but she also taught almost every subject offered in some of the school districts. She retired from the Coffee County School System in 1985. Even after her retirement, she continued to tutor children and adults in her home for many years.
She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Tennessee Education Association as well as a member of the Coffee County Retired Teacher Association. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education. She was proud to have voted in seventeen presidential elections and considered civic responsibility and awareness to be important parts of her life. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a love of words reflected in her voraciousness for working puzzles and reading. Before time ate away her dexterity, she enjoyed cooking, needlework, sewing and growing flowers, but most of all, she enjoyed the company of people. She was also a longtime member of Beechgrove Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded by her loving husband, Alfred Raymond Fischer; a great aunt and uncle, who were like foster parents, Brenda Jacobs Mason and Benjamin Sewell Mason; siblings, Paul Gannaway Mason, II, Anna Louise Mason, and Mattie Jean Mason Bryant, and sisters-in-law, Irene Fischer Haimowitz and Delores Fischer Howell.
