A devout Christian Pentecostal, she received the Holy Ghost at a young age while working in the corn field. She read, studied and lived by the Bible. A wise and frugal woman of strong moral and ethical character, she taught her children by example to love one another and not talk about one another. She was a Charter Member of the Vine Street Church of God. To feed her family she made and sold bedspreads at the Owens Spread Factory, walking several miles each way to sell her goods. She loved her garden, canning and horses. In 2007 she was crowned Sr. Ms. Tennessee by United Regional Health Care.
