State Demands Smoke Removal System Upgrades Needed Before New Jail Can Open
Construction managers now say an additional $362,000 is needed for upgrades to the smoke removal system before inmates can be moved in. The upgrades were recently demanded by state fire marshals.
Construction managers and county officials will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Coffee County Administrative Plaza.
Despite the fact that all architectural plans, drawings and specifications were approved up front by state and local building officials two years ago, fire marshals are now saying the smoke evacuation system fails certain tests and is not adequate for inmate safety.
