Sophomore Luke Toms hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Motlow Bucks to a 7-6 win over Walters St. Saturday in the semifinals of the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament in Gallatin. With the win the Bucks advanced to Sunday’s championship game, where they fell to top-seed Columbia St 8-4. However, because Motlow (40-22) finished as the tournament runner-up, they will advance along with Columbia St. to the NJCAA East/Central District tournament May 15-17 in Covington, Georgia. The tournament in Georgia will be held this coming weekend to determine its two representatives in the national tournament. The last time the Bucks advanced to a district tournament was 2000, when former coach Don Rhoton led Motlow to a district championship and a berth in the NJCAA national tournament where they finished as national runner-up. It is the only time in Motlow baseball history the Bucks have played in the national tournament.
