Wildflower Walk

 

SPRING TIME IS HERE AND CLOUDLAND CANYON STATE PARK IS ENHANCED WITH A WILDFLOWERS BLOOMING IN THE PARK. ON APRIL 13TH AT 10 AM LARRY WILLIAMS, AN EXPERT ON AREA WILDFLOWERS WILL LEAD A FORTY-FIVE MINUTE WALK TO SHOW AND TALK ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS, BLOOMING SHRUBS AND TREES. OTHER WILDFLOWER WALKS WILL BE LEAD BY STEPHANIE FISCHER, THE PARK NATURALIST PERIODICALLY. THE TOURS, KNOWN AS WILDFLOWER WALKS, WILL TRACE THE PARK’S CLEARED TRAILS AND FEATURE AN ARRAY OF PLANT LIFE, INCLUDING TULIPS, SPANISH BLUEBELLS, IRISES, CORN FLOWERS, AND LARKSPUR. THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMES JUST IN TIME FOR APRIL, WHEN A MAJORITY OF GEORGIA’S 343 SPECIES OF WILDFLOWERS WILL COME INTO BLOOM.

“SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME TO VISIT CLOUDLAND CANYON STATE PARK,” SAID PARK MANAGER BOBBY WILSON. “SOON REDBUDS AND DOGWOODS WILL BEGIN TO BLOOM, FOLLOWED BY RHODODENDRONS AND MOUNTAIN LAURELS. WHETHER YOU ENJOY SIGHTSEEING, HIKING, DISC GOLFING, GEOCACHING, FISHING, OR STAYING FOR THE NIGHT, WE HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER DURING THIS BEAUTIFUL SEASON.”

CLOUDLAND STATE PARK ADMISSION IS FREE WITH A FIVE DOLLAR PARKING FEE.

old stone fort state parkOld Stone Fort State Archaeological Park will hold their 37th bi-annual Knap-in and Pre-historic Skills Event Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2013 at the park museum.  Demonstrators practicing the primitive skill of spear point or arrowhead making, otherwise known as flintknappers, will be present Friday morning through Sunday afternoon.  Use of the atlatl or spear-throwing stick will be taught Friday afternoon and all day Saturday with international accuracy contests for the more experienced users taking place Friday and Saturday afternoons.  Those that have artifacts that they’ve wondered about or wanted to know the age of arrowheads they’ve found can have a state archaeologist identify it all day Saturday.  Other programs during the main day, Saturday, will include cordage or rope making from plants, pottery making, a plant identification and use walk, a talk on current research in Tennessee archaeology, and a guided hike around the Native American mound site known as the Old Stone Fort.  See the complete schedule of events below or call the park office at (931)723-5073 or email Park Manager Keith Wimberley at Keith.Wiimberley@tn.gov for more information.

Lunch will be served after His presentation.

Anyone with any degree of visual loss and family are urged to attend and join.
