On Monday, November 11th, the Manchester American Legion Gold Star Post 78 will again host the Veterans Day Ceremony on the Coffee County Courthouse Square at 11:00 a.m.
All citizens, but especially veterans, the families of any deceased veteran, or any person currently serving on active duty, reserve, or in the guard, are invited to honor those who have or still serve our country. In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held at the Coffee County Veterans Building, 130 Shelton Road in Manchester.
Veterans Day goes back to 1919 when people celebrated the end of World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Until 1954 the holiday was called Armistice Day. After World War 11 and Korea, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change “Armistice” to” Veterans” as a way to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they served.
