Jim Berthay, age 76 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on October 3, 2013 at the Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN.
Mr. Berthay retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) in 1987 after 32 years of service in Cleveland, OH, Boston, MA and Springfield, IL. He served as Bureau Unit Chief, Management of White Collar Crime investigations throughout the United States. He testified in Federal Court on numerous occasions concerning results of investigations requiring examinations of financial books and records. He was assigned to the Surveys and Investigation Staff, House Appropriations Commitee, U.S.Congress and FBIHQ for over two years.
In addition, he served in the Drug Enforcement Administration Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and at the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.) and was the Assistant Chief of Interpol, U.S. National Central Bureau.
A native of Guntown, Mississippi, Mr. Berthay earned his Degree in Accounting from the Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. and was a United States Army Veteran; 50 year member of the Grand Lodge, F.A.A.M. of the District of Columbia of the Potomac Lodge # 5; a 27 year member of the Winnebago ITASCA Travelers Club; a member of Former Special Agents of the F.B.I., Inc., Chattanooga, TN Chapter and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Susan Berthay.
Mr. Berthay is survived by his loving wife, Carol A. Abel Berthay of Manchester, TN; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Home in Manchester, TN.
The Funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Manchester, TN with Father Stephen Klasek officiating.
Burial will be at a later date at the Arlington National Cemetery.
