Funeral services for Mrs. Doris Marie Vickers, age 84 of the Gnat Hill community, will be conducted Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 4:00 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel with Brother Dale Grosch and Brother Keith Sims officiating.
Interment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Vickers passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital in Nashville.
She was born March 7, 1929 in the Poplar Grove community of Putnam County, TN the daughter of the late Albert Hyder and Cora West Hyder. She and her siblings grew up in Sparta, TN. Doris married Monroe Franklin “Bill” Vickers on October 23, 1948. For many years, she and her late husband farmed in the Gnat Hill community where they resided. She retired from the University of TN Agricultural Extension Office, Food and Nutrition Department after many years of service.
In earlier years, Mrs. Vickers was actively involved in the Blanton’s Chapel Chapter of the Home Demonstration Club and was a long time member of Woodmen of the World. She enjoyed sewing and was always ready to help anyone with anything and was a true caregiver in every sense of the word. She was also an Honorary member of the Soroptimist Club and a longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vickers is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Monroe Franklin “Bill” Vickers who passed away February 15, 2009; three sisters, Mertie Bartlett, Mildred Swearington and Ruby Grissom and a brother, Louis Hyder.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Neal and Nancy Vickers of Manchester; and Gary and Candy Vickers also of Manchester; four grandchildren, Christy and husband, John Lewis; Curtis and wife, Jennifer Vickers; Whitney Vickers; and Michelle Arnold; seven great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Lewis, Olivia Lewis and Jonathan Lewis; ; Ragen Arnold and Zane Montgomery; Madison Vickers and Cheyenne Vickers. Also surviving is a sister, Lucille Dodson of Sparta, TN.
