Farmers in and around Coffee County have experienced record amounts of rain this year, which has pushed back planting times for crops like corn and soybeans, according to Steve Harris, of the UT Extension in Manchester. According to area farmers, Coffee County and surrounding areas have seen more rain than usual – especially in May and June. Instead of planting the corn crop in early May he and his crew had to wait until Memorial Day because of all the rain. The National Weather Service expects heavy rainfall through the weekend, and flooding is a possibility.
