A Harris Middle School staff member has been suspended after allegedly slapping a special education student, according to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette.
W. Bret Lawrence, 53, of Lantern Lane was charged with assault Friday afternoon following an incident earlier this week, Detective Charles Kimbril of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department said.
Lawrence is a teacher’s assistant at Harris, a Bedford County School System spokesperson said.
“The student was cursing in the classroom,” Lawrence was quoted by school student resource officer Eric Henson as saying. “I reached across and gave a pop on the side of the mouth and pulled him face to face with me to get his attention.”
Lawrence had been associated with the school since 2008, Kimbril said, and had no previous reports of violence or problems at the school or a police record in general. His initial court date has been set for May 22.
