George DeShields has been named the new fire chief for the city of Manchester, Manchester Mayor Lonnie Norman confirmed to WMSR on Wednesday afternoon.
DeShields takes over the position after the resignation of Charlie Taylor in February. Assistant Chief Mark Reed has been serving in an interim role since Taylor moved to Alabama.
DeShields has been an assistant chief with the AEDC Fire Department for the past 3 years and spent 21 years prior to AEDC as a firefighter in the Air Force.
DeShields also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department and was a reserve for the Manchester Fire Department before taking the chief position.
The Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen will meet Tuesday night, May 7, to consider his appointment. Mayor Norman doesn’t anticipate any problems.
DeShields is working out a two-week notice with AEDC but is already working in Manchester on his days off including yesterday.
