In an effort to reduce so called pill mills operating in Coffee County, the Manchester Police Department indicted 35 people during last week’s grand jury. Manchester Police Chief Mark Yother stated that investigators have been purchasing illegal narcotics from individuals here in Coffee Count since September 2012. The department spent approximately $10,000 on the drug purchases. Armed with the sealed indictments Manchester officers along executed a “Spring Cleaning” with deputies from the Coffee County Sheriff’s department fanned out over the county early Friday morning and started arresting those named in the indictments. Once they were arrested they were then booked into the Coffee County Jail on drug charges. In addition to those arrested investigators referred several cases to the federal authorities for drug and weapons charges. There were 20 other individuals who were arrested during the undercover operation and their cases are pending in the court system now. Yother stated that prescription fraud is of epidemic proportion at this time and has been in the past.
