Grundy County officials are looking at moving their female inmates to a west state jail. Mayor Lonnie Cleek says the Carroll County Jail in Huntingdon charges $37 per day per inmate to take care of female prisoners. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports continued overcrowding at the jail in Altamont is causing them to consider the move. The Grundy County County Commissioners voted in February with plans to build a new jail. That facility is expected cost approximately $5 million. The county mayor says construction startup could be over a year away. The Altamont jail is designed to hold 34 inmates and has only four beds for women. The facility often holds up to 13 women and more than 50 male and female inmates combined.
