The Department of Children’s Services is trying to regroup after losing track of deaths in recent months. Officials from the agency briefed state lawmakers on the progress Tuesday. Tom Cheatham says the DCS commissioner will now be in the loop on every fatality and help notify lawmakers in that child’s district. DCS is asking for an additional $15 million to shore up the department. Interim commissioner Jim Henry says some of the money will go to things as small as smart phones for caseworkers, who regularly need access to child photos that can’t be viewed on their old-school flip phones.
