A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late James E. Shelton and Maggie Lou Eady Shelton who survives. She was retired from the Moore County Board of Education as a school bus driver. She was a member of the Berry Chapel AME Church. She enjoyed ceramics, sewing and especially cooking.
Along with her mother, she is survived by her children. William Richard Word of Nashville and Curtis Lee Word and daughter, Lenora Word both of Lynchburg. Sisters; Ella Mai Rippy and her husband Willie of Shelbyville, Roberta Cannon and her husband Harvey of Lansing, Michigan, Louise March and her husband Coleman and Dora Sally Shelton both of Lynchburg. 4 grandchildren; Rikita Word of Lynchburg, Teneshia Hardin of Fayetteville, Chawntia Harden of Fayetteville and Laqueia Buchanan and her husband Alex of Huntsville, Al and 6 great-grandchildren. Good friends; Laura Ford of Lynchburg, Ginger Moore of Nashville and Wilson Massey of Lynchburg and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Willis Shelton and a sister, Annie Nell Wells.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 10:00 until time of services beginning at 2 PM at the Lynchburg Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Coleman March Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow in the Highview Cemetery in Lynchburg.
