The construction of the up to $22 million new Coffee County jail is underway. At completion the jail will house up to 400 inmates. The new jail should take around 14 months to complete just off the Hillsboro Highway beside Fann’s Salvage. The current jail in Manchester was built to house 196 inmates but at times houses over 300 on weekends. Part of the land was formerly used as a mobile home park. Bell Construction officials say they are confident that they will be able to start erecting the walls of the new jail in March.
Approximately 6 ¾ acres of the property were deemed as wetlands and must be left undeveloped.
