A Tullahoma man who was found guilty of the first-degree murder of a 2-year-old has filed a motion asking for a new trial.
Thomas “TJ” Greenwood, 24, was found guilty by a jury of seven women and five men last April of the first degree murder of Hayden Gage West at the child’s residence on Circle Drive, Tullahoma.
According to testimony presented during the trial, on March 9, 2010 Greenwood was babysitting the child while the mother had gone to court with a family member.
Police testified that they were sent to Harton Regional Medical Center due to a child having several bruises all over his body, face and the head area.
A representative from the State Medical Examiner’s Office testified that the child died as the result of multiple blunt force injuries to the body and that the death was a homicide.
Greenwood told police that he suffered a seizure and fell causing Hayden’s head to hit the bed rail. He said that a few minutes later the child began to have difficulty breathing and that he placed the child on his asthma machine to help him breath.
After Greenwood was convicted he was transferred to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
A hearing on the new trial request has been set for March 20 in Coffee County Circuit Court.
